---- Reported by nengard@gmail.com 2009-03-05 05:28:43 ----

Along the same lines as hiding lost items from being listed in the OPAC. I'd love to see the ability to hide and entire collection code or shelving location from the patrons.

The logic behind this is that some schools use the catalog to keep track of textbooks, but do not circulate them and do not want them to show in the results that patrons see. They're using the catalog as an inventory tool for those items. Another example would be books that are on librarian's desks. The library wants to keep track of them but does not want the patrons to know that those books are in the library since they are for librarian use only.

Another way to do this would be to add another not for loan category that can be hidden from view in the OPAC...

Hope that all makes sense.

---- Additional Comments From mcoalwell@nekls.org 2009-06-29 20:53:06 ----

NEKLS intends to spec an enhancement which involves making an bib/item invisible in the OPAC, while allowing it to display in the staff interface. I propose creating a new item status value to control this. It should toggle in the same way that Withdrawn currently toggles -- it's either Suppressed, or not Suppressed

Statuses

   1. Current Location: Ottawa Library
   2. Checkout Status: Not Checked out
   3. Lost Status:
   4. Damaged Status:
   5. Withdrawn?:No

This "masked" or "suppressed" behavior will have the following characteristics:

1. If only one item is attached to a bib record, and the item is Suppressed, then the bib record display should also be suppressed.
2. If there is more than one item record attached to a bib, and at least one is not Suppressed, then the bib and all unsupressed items should display in the OPAC.
3. All items, Suppressed or not, will appear in staff interface searches.

We are interested in this, but in a more flexible "show in search results for now, as long as any click-throughs are a permission-denied type of screen" way.
The permission-denied type of screen could be used as an incentive to get people to join the library for full access to resources.

I think that this is mostly covered by opachiddenitems these days - Nicole, could you confirm?
