Description Liz Rea 2011-02-10 21:06:57 UTC
The interface currently shows waiting holds on the checkout page, and hotlinks the title of the book.

One of my librarians suggested that it would be super cool if next to that alert you could click a link that would either send the barcode to the check out box, or check out the item without having to actually find and scan the barcode on the item.

(Original idea from Sarah Walker-Hitt at Lyndon Carnegie Library, Lyndon, Kansas)

I feel, upon further reflection, that it might suffice to simply display the barcode so it can be copy/pasted or just entered by hand.

Bug 5739 - Show the barcode of the waiting item on the circulation page

To test:

1. place a hold for a borrower
2. mark the hold waiting for that borrower
3. view that borrower's circulation page
4. without the patch, no barcode will be displayed under "hold waiting for..." With it, the barcode will be linked to the item.

Patch works and passes QA. However I have some additional thoughts:
1) Making the barcode a link to moredetail.pl makes it much more difficult to copy and paste. You can no longer just double click the barcode to highlight it.
2) I think the idea of making it a link that pastes the barcode into the checkout box automatically is a good one since it obviates the need to do these extra actions.

Yeah I think the link to moredetail.pl eliminates the usefulness of outputting the barcode here.

Having a thought to revisit this - would something like

barcode ([link to patron detail]) be better?

This was raised at the koha-US General Meeting today.

This would help with library workflows and reduce clicks, particularly where the circulation desk holds the holds and issues them (where a self-service for waiting holds is not available).

Current clicks:
- Click the link to the item on the patron's check out or details page
- Copy the barcode number from the details column
- Go back to the patron's check out page
- Paste the link
- (Alternatively, click the holds tab, copy from the barcode column, paste into the barcode field)

So:
1. Having the barcode on the check out page before the title would be great
2. Making it easier to copy would be excellent
3. Having it populate the barcode field in the check out page for the patron would be even better!

Bug 41539 implements 1 (which is similar to the original bug here).
