Description Carlos Lopez 2019-01-29 23:31:05 UTC
Dear colleagues
How hard would it be to allow Rancor to edit authority records?
Regards,
Carlos Lopez

Hi Carlos, not a lot of people read the bug email - maybe ask the mailing list in parallel.

Thanks Katrin

I'll do that.

I would LOVE to have an "Advanced Authority Editor" for authority records. Editing authorities with all the many, many, many tabs that have to be clicked through...wait to load...wait to load...ALL the clicking load, clicking load, clicking load...it makes editing an authority record very laborious, very tedious, and very slow. Considering that most authority records are very short, it really drags out the process to edit them. A typical edit that I do is to add a locally used term into a 4XX field, with a 667 note, and a $d code in the 040, and that could sometimes take less than a minute if I could use an advanced editor for that rather than having to use the very slow and laborious basic editor.

Rather than dealing with the slowness of the basic editor interface, I'll use other tools to download an aut record, edit it, then import it and overlay it. (Which, of course, also takes a while since we don't have a gateway export interface for authorities, but that's another bug that needs to be written.)

I would VERY much appreciate an advanced editor being developed for authority records.

Or is it an impossible dream to have just one editor, and you edit any kind of record in it that you want--bibs, items, auts, patrons...? (I would so love that.)

Couldn't agree more. In fact, if this was to be considered a different bug, I believe it could get many votes from a lot of cataloguers I know...

There is another reason this would be fantastic to have: sometimes authorities are entered with the wrong 1XX field. For example, the correct subject heading is:

650 _ 0 $aAubrey, Jack (Fictitious character)

But a cataloger could think, "Hmmm...it's a name...I'll enter it:"
600 10 $aAubrey, Jack $c(Fictitious character)

And maybe even create an authority record for it off of that bib resulting in an authority record with this:
100 10 $aAubrey, Jack $c(Fictitious character)

If you're an OCLC library, it's an easy fix--put this field into the OCLC record:
010 _ _ $ash 92000670
Overlay the correct authority record over the wrong local record, and, voila! The linked bib's 600 is corrected.

But what about ALL the non-OCLC libraries? What about those who don't have easy access to aut records to import? Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to simple go into the aut record in an advanced editor and type over the incorrect 100 with the correct:
150 _ 0 $aAubrey, Jack (Fictitious character)

I know the priority is low. It's a feature that appeals to a small portion of users. But I bet if you measured the work hours saved, it would be HUGE.

This would be enormously helpful at our library. Our cataloging invests a great deal of time making sure our authority records are accurate and up to date, and the ability to use the advanced editor in authorities would save SO much time. We would LOVE this!

My cataloging team and I are very interested in having the ability to edit authority records using the advanced editor. We are very focused on improving our authority database and being able to edit the authorities easier would be a big step in achieving that goal.

The cataloging team at my library would also love to have the ability to edit authority records using the advanced editor. I'll watch for updates to this bug report.

Add us to the list of libraries whose catalogers would really enjoy this feature.
