As I help patrons find general sections for what they are looking for in non-fiction, I am realizing that we could do something a little smarter in Koha. If I have a patron looking for a subject, I refer them to a Dewey Decimal Classification poster, but that poster is limited. When it is, I will show them how to search the subject, and then look at different entries to see where they generally land in the collection. I was thinking, wouldn't it be great if: 1) When you put in a search term, if the term is a classification, it would put in a bar across the top of the results that said something like: It looks like you are looking for: blah, and then give the Dewey number it is associated with. 2) Give a link in the side navigation menu where holds are so patrons could look up a list of classifications if they don't know an exact term. Kind of like the poster, but maybe more exhaustive. Thoughts?
If we had the Dewey classifications as authorities this could work with the Did you mean service - it already does similar things.
That said... it wouldn't need to be based on authorities, but could also be some other source of data. What is the license situation with DDC currently?
