---- Reported by jwagner@ptfs.com 2009-10-09 16:12:27 ----

The system currently displays the Koha login line followed by contents of the syspref opacheader followed by the rest of the Koha masthead. If a site uses a large graphic or text block in the opacheader, such as a site's standard web page header, the visual effect is to divorce the Koha login from the Koha masthead. Especially if the opacheader contains links to organization networks and sites, people can be confused about what the login link is for. I've done a patch to swap places -- the Koha login line comes after the opacheader. This keeps it visually linked to the Koha masthead.

Owen asked for a screen shot -- the attached is not as pronounced as another site, where the organization wanted a whole set of home page links, login and search links for the main web site, but it shows the separation and an arrow to roughly where I moved the login line.

I must say, I don't like this idea. The goal with the placement of the login link at the top right of the page was always to /keep/ it at the top right of the page, even with the contents of opacheader there. The design was based on the assumption that many users would understand that area of the screen to be used for that purpose--maybe not necessarily for the login link itself, but for the information about the user's logged in status after being logged in. Look at Google, Flickr, Delicious, NY Times, even the iTunes store. I agree that this sometimes presents problems integrating with existing site designs--I've been faced with the same issue. But I think it would be a mistake to make this a default.

This bug has been open for almost a year, and no alternative patch has been sent. I would suggest moving the login info using jQuery, if it is necessary. Marking this bug as RESOLVED--WONTFIX.
